Wednesday:
Village Camper Inn/Crescent City/CA
The only way we could connect with US Route 101 (the Pacific coastal route) was to head back south into California today. So tonight, we are camping south of Oregon, by the Pacific.
As usual, our drive was amazing today. We did another separate drive, because the CA legal limit for vehicles is 40 feet on those steep and curvy mountain roads (US 199). We drove through some huge Redwood (State and National) Forests today. A number of the trees were literally butted up against the road and one tree had significant scars where vehicles would swipe it as they curved around it. It was a thrilling drive at times.
After we set up camp, we drove into town to check things out and took a gander at the coastline. It was rugged and evidently subject to unpredictable, damaging high waves now and then. Case in point...possibly you remember there was a Tsunami here in 1964 which did a lot of damage. This web site about the painting of the mural is well worth the look... www.artmortimer.com/pages/crescentcity
We heard there are about twenty murals dotted around the city. Maybe it was todays overcast gray sky that gave off this atmosphere...but we both felt a sense of depression in the area...the people seemed to be a little listless and withdrawn too....anyway, we are happily back in our own cozy RV...glad to be away from that gloomy cold air...and hope the populace of Crescent City have happy homes to return to also.
