Thursday:
HAMMOND, LOUISIANA
We were in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana today. Part of the trip scanned the Gulf which took us along the beaches of Gulf Port and Biloxi. This was all new terrain for us, since we drove Route 10 in 2008. I believe this was the area that was affected by the oil spill a couple of years ago and unfortunately, Katrina too. In fact, the beach was directly on our left (scenic route!) and on our right side were large beach homes and a mixture of foundations of buildings, only...Katrina's legacy. Many properties had For Sale signs and there was quite a bit of construction going on today...both homes and businesses, still.
It was an overcast day...the sky was grey the whole drive. We enjoyed miles and miles of beach frontage and didn't see one soul out there the whole time. We walked out a little ways and Stan put his foot in the water to say he touched the Gulf waters. All we could figure was, it just wasn't sunny beach weather...just pleasant temps and breezy. Very interesting route though, and I think we're both glad we veered off the interstate and caught route 90 today.
Our goal for tomorrow is to reach Texas.
THE ROAD NOT TAKEN/ by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence
Two roads diverges in a wood, and I
Took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference!
