Tuesday:
Makah Indian Reservation/Washington State
A very special day out...since we really enjoy watching wildlife. The drive in was interesting as we neared the Makah Reservation, there was about 35 miles of winding narrow roads overlooking the bay...these were lower range mountains with lots of overviews. Vancouver Island, Canada is seen in the distance at some of the sites. We drove all the way up to Cape Flattery and we walked the half mile path....we didn't see another soul walking along. Almost to the top, there was a sign taped to a tree: Warning Cougar spotted in this vicinity July 2011. Now they tell me, when I'm half mile into the forest...ha.
By then it was lunchtime, so we decided on a place called Warm House at the reservation. It felt fresh, clean and new....and we had a nice meal there. While eating, we asked the waitress about the eagles. We'd heard you would be sure to see some there in the village but until then we hadn't seen one. She pointed out their picture windows and said they were all over the shore. I couldn't wait to finish my lunch and get out there. Sure enough, the first one we spotted was sitting near the water right down on the beach. After that we saw what seemed to be dozens! I even think I saw two with talons locked spiraling down, as I heard they do when courting...or they could have possibly been fighting over a fish, but couldn't get my camera focused in time to record it. We saw an eagle swoop down and catch a fish out of the water, too. This was all a very amazing afternoon. We walked down on the pier and Stan talked briefly to a few of the fishermen working there. There was a group cleaning fish, which, of course, was ideal for bringing in birds like the eagles and seagulls. Who wouldn't go for a free lunch daily? We could hear the sea lions and located them on their own little piece of real estate on the water...photo following. It was such a treat to watch the wildlife...especially the eagles in flight.
Next, Makah Museum, chronicling the Makah Indian's history. This has been described as a world class museum...a bargain at only $4 per (senior) person. By then we were ready to head back 'home' to the RV Park. Banner day!
