Bear Claw RV Park/Valdez/Alaska
I mentioned the mother bear with the four cubs before. We decided to set our alarm for 5:30 a.m. and drive out the Prince William Sound to, hopefully, catch mama and cubs on yet another grand appearance. To our disappointment, someone told us she had already been there with her cubs about an hour earlier. We did enjoy the mountains in a blanket of beautiful clouds and that in itself was worth the effort. The funny thing is, we spotted a bear in town right before lunch!! We watched him run a while and dart behind some bushes...then an animal control SUV came along and some people were pointing to where he was last seen. I mentioned this to someone and they said there were a number of bears spotted in town lately. Guess we didn't have to go out of our way after all, although I'd still like to catch a glimpse of that mama and cubs....that would really be special.
We visited three of Valdez's museums today. It was interesting learning about their historical earthquake and oil spill. There was also a museum about this area's natural environment and local history. This is the second Valdez....the first one, located some distance away, was not considered a safe location after the 1964 earthquake.
