Tuesday:
Chicken Creek RV Park/Chicken/AlaskaWe boarded the ferry at Dawson City and it took…us…RV…and tow…across the rushing Klondike river this morning.
We began the 8 mile climb on The Top of the World Highway, when Stan noticed that our Jeep was sitting in the middle of the road a short ways back! The welds on the hitch/receiver had totally broken off the RV; something that should never happen. After we both recovered from a mild case of disbelief and the ‘oh nos!’ Stan unhooked the hitch from the Jeep and stored it wherever there was room in the RV ‘basement’ and I drove the next 90 some miles behind the RV with drizzling rain at first, and the rest of the day with dust flying to the next town. Remember I mentioned there was news of a forest fire in the vacinity and now and then I could smell the smoke from it on our drive and see a mist of smoke in the distance.
If you’ve been to Alaska, then you know the Top of the World Hwy is mostly gravel roads, steep and narrow at times…but oh, the views! Each day the scenery seems to top itself…so I may possibly be running out of adjectives soon. I have to say if recent views were grandiose, today’s views were quite majestic!!
The border crossing went extremely smooth. The American guard all but waved us through. And now we have finally arrived in Alaska!
So, back to reality… we are now on a mission to get the hitch welded back in usable form, and hope to be up and back to normal soon…at least that’s plan A! Stay tuned...
